Protests large but peaceful after new charges in Floyd case

Demonstrations across the U.S. to condemn racism and police abuses remained large but mostly without the violence of previous nights on the eve of a Thursday memorial service for George Floyd that kicks off a series of events to mourn the man whose death empowered a national movement.

The calmer protests followed a decision by prosecutors to charge three more police officers and file a new, tougher charge against the officer at the center of the case.

The most serious new charge Wednesday was an accusation of second-degree murder against Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin, who was caught on video pressing his knee to Floyd’s neck. The three other officers at the scene were charged for the first time with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

인종차별과 경찰 과잉진압을 규탄하기 위해 미국 전역에서 벌어진 시위는 목요일에 있었던 조지 플로이드 추도식 전날 밤과 달리 대규모였지만 대부분 폭력사태가 발생하지 않았다.

검찰이 경찰관 3명을 추가 기소하고 사건의 중심에 있는 경찰관에 대해 새롭고 더 강력한 혐의를 적용하기로 결정한 후 보다 차분한 시위가 이어졌다.

가장 중대한 새로운 혐의는 플로이드의 목에 무릎을 대고 누르는 모습이 비디오에 찍힌 미니애폴리스 경찰관 데릭 초빈에 대한 2급 살인 혐의였다. 현장에 있던 다른 경찰관 3명은 2급 살인과 2급 과실치사 방조 혐의로 처음으로 기소됐다.
