Hong Kong leader says security law not a threat to freedoms

Hong Kong’s leader said Tuesday that national security legislation proposed by China’s legislature will not threaten the semi-autonomous territory’s civil rights, despite widespread criticism of the move as an encroachment on freedom of speech and assembly.

The city’s chief executive, Carrie Lam, told reporters that there was “no need for us to worry” over the move being considered by China’s ceremonial National People’s Congress.

“Hong Kong has proven that we uphold and preserve those values,” Lam said. “Hong Kong needs this piece of legislation for the bigger benefit of the great majority of Hong Kong people.”

홍콩의 행정장관은 화요일, 중국 입법부가 제안한 국가 보안법은 언론과 집회의 자유를 침해한다는 광범위한 비난에도 불구하고 반자치적 영토의 민권을 위협하지 않을 것이라고 말했다.

캐리 람 홍콩시 행정장관은 기자들에게 중국의 의례적인 전국인민대표회의가 이 조치를 검토하고 있는 것에 대해 걱정할 필요는 없다고 하였다.

람은 "홍콩은 우리가 그러한 가치들을 유지하고 보존한다는 것을 증명했으며, 대다수의 홍콩인들의 더 큰 이익을 위해 이 법률이 필요하다."고 말했다.
