China says US action on Hong Kong 'doomed to fail'

The mouthpiece of China’s ruling Communist Party said U.S. moves to end some trading privileges for Hong Kong “grossly interfere” in China’s internal affairs and are “doomed to fail.”

Saturday’s editorial in the newspaper People’s Daily was responding to an announcement from President Donald Trump, after China’s ceremonial parliament bypassed Hong Kong’s local legislature to advance legislation that could severely curtail free speech and opposition political activities in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.

It was the “firm determination of all Chinese people” to oppose interference in Hong Kong affairs by any external forces, the paper said.

중국 공산당의 대변인은 미국이 홍콩에 대한 일부 무역 특권의 박탈을 중국 내정에 "엄청난 간섭"이라며 "결국엔 실패할 것"이라고 말했다.

중국 전국인민대표대회에서 홍콩 지방 입법부를 우회해 홍콩과 같은 반자율적인 중국 영토에서 자유언론과 반대 정치활동을 크게 위축시킬 수 있는 법안을 추진한 데 이어 토요일 인민일보의 사설은 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 발표에 반응하였다.

홍콩 문제에 어떠한 외부 세력의 간섭도 반대한다는 것은 '모든 중국인의 단호한 결의'라고 신문은 전했다. /박경민(번역)
