EU, China look to ease tensions, push on with business

Top European Union officials are holding talks Monday with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang at a time of rising tensions between two major trading partners over the fallout from the coronavirus crisis and Beijing’s increasing control over Hong Kong.

European Council President Charles Michel, EU commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, will hold two video conferences separately, first with the premier and later with Xi.

The meetings are not expected to produce concrete results — no joint statement will be issued — but the Europeans hope it will boost slow-moving talks on an investment agreement and build some common ground for tackling thorny political issues at a face-to-face meeting, hopefully late in the year.

EU와 중국, 긴장 완화 및 사업 추진 

코로나 바이러스 사태와 중국의 홍콩 통제 강화의 여파로 양국 주요 교역국 간 긴장이 고조되고 있는 가운데 유럽연합(EU) 고위 관료들은 시진핑 중국 국가주석, 리커창 총리와 회담을 갖는다.

샤를 미셸 유럽평의회 의장, 우르술라 폰 데르 레옌 EU 집행위원장, 요제프 보렐 블록 외교정책 수장은 각각 두 차례 화상회의를 우선 리커창 총리와, 이후 시진핑 주석과 함께할 예정이다.

이번 회담은 구체적인 결과를 도출할 것으로 기대되지는 않지만 공동성명은 발표되지 않을 것으로 보인다.  유럽인들은 이를 계기로 더뎌진 투자협정 회담을 활성화하고, 올해 영상 대면 회담에서 난해한 정치적 문제들을 다루기 위한 공통된 의견에 도달하기를 바라고 있다.
