Afghanistan quake kills 1,000 people, deadliest in decades

A powerful earthquake struck a rural, mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan early Wednesday, killing 1,000 people and injuring 1,500 more in one of the country’s deadliest quakes in decades, the state-run news agency reported. Officials warned that the already grim toll may still rise.

Information from the remote area near the Pakistani border remained scarce, but early footage from villages tucked among the rough mountains showed residents picking through rubble of collapsed stone and mudbrick houses.

수요일 아프가니스탄 동부 산악지대에서 강력한 지진이 발생해 1,000명이 사망하고 1,500명이 부상했다고 국영통신이 보도했다. 관계자들은 가뜩이나 심각한 사망자 수가 여전히 증가할 수 있다고 경고했다.

파키스탄 국경 인근 외딴 지역의 정보는 부족했지만 험준한 산 속에 숨어있는 마을들의 초기 영상은 주민들이 무너진 돌과 흙벽돌 집들의 잔해를 파헤치는 모습을 보여주었다.
