Uganda's president orders suspension of European-backed fund

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the suspension of a multimillion-dollar fund backed by European nations that supports the work of local groups focusing on democracy and good governance.

Museveni, who was re-elected last month in a disputed vote, in a letter to his finance minister charges that money withdrawn from the Democratic Governance Facility has been “used to finance activities and organizations designed to subvert Government under the guise of improving governance.”

우간다의 요웨리 무세베니 대통령은 민주주의와 올바른 통치에 초점을 맞춘 지역 단체들의 활동을 지원하는 유럽 국가들의 수백만 달러의 기금을 중단하라고 명령했다.

논란이 있는 투표로 지난달 재선된 무세베니는 재무장관에게 보낸 서한을 통해 민주통치기관에서 인출된 자금이 "통치의 개선을 빙자하여 정부를 전복시키기 위해 조직된 활동과 단체로의 자금 조달에 사용되었다"고 주장했다.
