Japan records high of daily virus cases, amid worrying spike

Japan reported a record number of daily coronavirus infections Thursday, amid a worrying spike in a country that has been spared the worst of the pandemic and hopes to host the Olympics next year.

Compared to many other countries, Japan has done well combatting the virus, reporting just under 2,000 deaths in a nation of 126 million since the pandemic began. But Tokyo saw a record number of single-day cases twice this week, and the Health Ministry said Thursday that the national number hit a record with 2,179 new cases.

That’s the first time Japan has had more than 2,000 daily cases since the pandemic began. The previous high was set Saturday.Japan records high of daily virus cases, amid worrying spike.

일본, 일일 바이러스 확진 건수 급증

최악의 대유행을 피해 내년 올림픽 개최를 희망하고 있는 일본에서 우려스러운 코로나 바이러스 확산 급증세를 보이고 있는 가운데 목요일 일본은 기록적인 수의 일일 코로나 바이러스 확진자가 발생했다고 발표했다.

다른 많은 나라들과 비교해 볼 때, 일본은 전염병이 시작된 이후 1억 2,600만 명의 인구에서 2,000명 미만의 사망자가 발생했다고 보고하면서 바이러스에 잘 대처해왔다. 그러나 일본 정부는 이번 주 두 차례에 걸쳐 하루 동안 사상 최대 확진자를 기록했으며 목요일 보건부는 국내 신규 확진자 수가 2,179명으로 사상 최대를 기록했다고 발표했다.

일본에서 바이러스 대유행이 시작된 이래 매일 2,000명 이상의 확진자가 발생한 것은 이번이 처음이다.
