Azerbaijan, Armenia report shelling of cities despite truce

Azerbaijan on Sunday accused Armenia of attacking large cities overnight in violation of the cease-fire deal brokered by Russia that seeks to end the worst outbreak of hostilities in the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Azerbaijani authorities said that nine civilians were killed and more than 30 others wounded after Armenian forces fired missiles at Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second-largest city, and hit a residential building. The city of Mingachevir also came under missile attacks, according to Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s office.

Nagorno-Karabakh’s military officials denied attacking Ganja and said the territory’s army is observing the cease-fire. They added that during the night Azerbaijani forces shelled Stepanakert, the region’s capital, and other towns in violation of the truce.

아제르바이잔은 아르메니아가 분리주의지역인 나가르노-카라바흐 지역에서 발생한 최악의 적대행위를 종식시키기 위해 러시아가 중재한 휴전협정을 하루아침에 위반해 일요일 대도시들을 공격했다고 비난했다.

아제르바이잔 당국은 아르메니아군이 아제르바이잔 제2의 도시 간자를 향해 미사일을 발사해 주택가 건물을 덮친 뒤 민간인 9명이 숨지고 30여 명이 다쳤다고 밝혔다. 아제르바이잔 검찰총장에 따르면 밍가체비르 시도 미사일 공격을 받았다.

나가르노 카라바흐의 군 관계자들은 간자를 공격한 사실을 부인하며 이 지역 군대가 휴전협정을 준수하고 있다고 말했다. 그들은 밤 동안 아제르바이잔 군대가 휴전을 위반하여 이 지역의 수도인 스테파나케르트와 다른 마을들을 포격했다고 덧붙였다.
