In hopeful sign, Pakistan says no new flood deaths in 3 days

Pakistan said Monday there have been no fatalities for the past three days from the deadly floods that engulfed the country since mid-June, a hopeful sign that the nation is turning a corner on the disaster.

Since the start of the unprecedented monsoon rains and flooding, 1,545 people have died and thousands more have been injured. The floods have affected 33 million people, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. Swelling waters have swept away villages, roads and bridges, and at one point inundated a third of Pakistan’s territory.

파키스탄은 지난 6월 중순 이후 발생한 치명적인 홍수로 인한 사망자가 3일간 없었다고 월요일 밝혔다. 이는 파키스탄이 재난의 고비를 넘기고 있다는 희망적인 신호이다.

유례없는 장맛비와 홍수가 시작된 이래 1,545명이 사망하고 수천명이 더 부상당했다. 홍수는 3,300만명의 사람들에게 영향을 미쳤고, 수십만명의 집을 잃었다. 불어난 물은 마을, 도로, 다리를 휩쓸었고 한때 파키스탄 영토의 3분의 1을 침수시켰다.
