Pakistan reopens highway to speed up aid to flood victims

Pakistani engineers and soldiers cleared a key highway on Thursday to enable aid workers to speed up supplies to survivors of devastating floods that have left hundreds of thousands homeless and killed 1,508 people, the majority of them women and children.

Traffic between the flood-hit city of Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province, and the southern Sindh province had been suspended for weeks after floods damaged the key highway. The blockage had forced the military to deliver aid to victims by helicopters and boats.

파키스탄의 기술자들과 군인들은 목요일 수십만 명의 이재민과 1508 명의 사망자를 낸 엄청난 홍수의 생존자들에게 구호물자를 신속하게 공급하기 위해 주요 고속도로를 개통했다.

홍수피해를 입은 발루치스탄주 남서부 주도인 퀘타와 남부 신드주 사이의 교통은 홍수로 주요 고속도로가 파손된 후 몇 주 동안 중단되었다. 이 봉쇄로 인해 군은 헬리콥터와 보트로 이재민들에게 구호품을 전달해야만 했다.
