Putin uses World War II parade to boost support before vote

A massive Russian military parade postponed by the coronavirus pandemic will roll through Red Square this week to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, even though Russia is still registering a steady rise in infections.

President Vladimir Putin’s insistence on holding the parade reflects not only his desire to put Russia’s power on display but also to bolster patriotic sentiments a week before a constitutional referendum that could allow him to remain in office until 2036.

The Victory Day parade normally is held on May 9, the nation’s most important secular holiday. This year’s date of Wednesday, June 24, coincides with the day in 1945 when the first parade was held on Red Square after the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Union and its allies.

여전히 러시아 내 감염자 수가 꾸준히 증가하고 있음에도 불구하고 코로나 바이러스 대유행으로 연기됐던 유럽 제2차 세계대전 종전 75주년을 기념하기 위한 러시아의 대규모 군사 퍼레이드가 이번주 붉은광장을 통과한다.

블라디미르 푸틴 대통령이 퍼레이드 개최를 고집한 것은 2036년까지 유임할 수 있는 개헌 국민투표를 일주일 앞두고 러시아의 힘을 과시하려는 의욕뿐만 아니라 애국심도 강화하려는 의도가 반영된 것으로 풀이된다.

승리의 날 퍼레이드는 국가의 가장 중요한 세속적인 명절인 5월 9일에 열린다. 올해 6월 24일 수요일은 나치 독일의 패전 이후 붉은광장에서의 소련과 그 동맹국들의 첫 퍼레이드가 열린 1945년 그날과 일치한다.
