Trump tries religious gestures to hike support amid protests

Cloaking himself in religion for the second day in a row, President Donald Trump sought to seize the moral authority to justify his hard line against demonstrators protesting the killing of another black man in police custody and at the same time mobilize his religious conservative base.

Trump signed an executive order on international religious freedom Tuesday and traveled to the Saint John Paul II National Shrine, where he and the first lady laid a ceremonial wreath and observed “a moment of remembrance.”

A day earlier, he had held up a Bible and posed for photos in front of a historic church across from the White House that had suffered fire damage from protesters. He strode through Lafayette Park to the church after authorities forcefully broke up peaceful protests there.

도널드 트럼프 대통령은 이틀 연속 종교에 몸을 숨긴 채 경찰의 흑인 살해에 항의하는 시위에 대한 강경책을 정당화하는 동시에 종교적 보수층을 집결시키기 위한 도덕적 권위를 장악하려고 한다.

트럼프 대통령은 20일 국제종교자유에 관한 행정명령에 서명하고 세인트존폴 2세 성지로 이동해 부인과 함께 기념 화환을 놓고 묵념을 하였다.

하루 전엔 시위대로 인해 화재 피해를 본 백악관 맞은편의 유서 깊은 교회 앞에서 사진을 찍기 위해 성경을 들고 포즈를 취했었다.

당국이 평화적 시위를 강제적으로 진압한 후 그는 라파예트 공원을 지나 교회로 성큼성큼 걸어갔다.
