An estimated 190,000 people in Africa could die of COVID-19 in the first year of the pandemic and the disease could “smolder” across the continent for years, the World Health Organization has warned.

As many as 44 million of the continent’s 1.3 billion people could be infected during the same period, the U.N. health agency estimated, based on its prediction model of 47 African countries.

But the projected number of infections and deaths is based on the assumption that no containment measures are taken. In fact, 43 African countries have implemented measures to reduce the spread of the virus, ranging from nationwide lockdowns to restrictions in major cities to curfews, closed schools and banned public gatherings.

세계보건기구는 아프리카에서 약 19만명의 사람들이 COVID-19 대유행 첫 해에 질병으로 사망할 수 있으며, 몇 년 동안 아프리카 전역에 크게 퍼질 수 있다고 경고했다.

유엔산하 보건기구는 아프리카 47개국을 대상으로 한 예측 모델을 토대로 같은 기간 아프리카대륙의 13억 명 중 무려 4400만 명이 감염될 수 있다고 추산했다.

그러나 여기서 추산된 감염자와 사망자들의 수는 어떠한 방역 조치도 취해지지 않았다는 가정에 근거하였다. 실제로 43개 아프리카 국가들은 야간 통행금지, 휴교, 공공 집회 금지 등 주요 도시에서의 제한부터 전국적인 봉쇄에 이르기까지 바이러스 확산을 줄이기 위한 다양한 조치들을 시행해 왔다.
