EU forecasts ‘recession of historic proportions’ this year -AP, 2020.5.7

The European Union predicted Wednesday “a recession of historic proportions this year” due to the impact of the coronavirus with a drop in output of more than 7%, as it released its first official forecast of the damage the pandemic is inflicting on the bloc’s economy.

The 27-nation EU economy is predicted to contract by 7.5% this year, before growing by about 6% in 2021. The group of 19 nations using the euro as their currency will see a record decline of 7.75% this year, and grow by 6.25% in 2021, the European Commission said in its Spring economic forecast.

“Europe is experiencing an economic shock without precedent since the Great Depression,” EU Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said in a statement.

유럽연합(EU)은 7일(현지시간) 코로나 바이러스의 여파로 생산량이 7% 이상 감소하여 역사적 규모의 경기 침체를 예상하였다.

27개국으로 이루어진 EU는 올해 7.5%의 경제 위축을 보이다가 2021년에는 약 6%의 성장률을 보일 것으로 예상된다. 유럽위원회는 유로화를 통화로 사용하는 19개국이 올해 사상 최대 7.75%의 마이너스 성장을 보일 것이며 2021년에는 6.25%의 성장률을 보일 것이라고 춘계 경제예측을 내놓았다.

파올로 젠틸로니 EU 경제담당 집행위원은 성명에서 "유럽은 대공황 이후 전례 없는 경제적 공황을 겪고 있다"고 말했다.
