Amid virus fears, China urges workers to skip holiday travel

China is encouraging tens of millions of migrant workers not to travel home during next February’s Lunar New Year holiday to prevent further spread of the coronavirus, disrupting its most important time for family gatherings.

The measure from the National Health Commission is not a direct travel ban but is still extraordinary because the traditional holiday is the only time of the year when many workers have the opportunity to travel home to see their families. 중국은 코로나 바이러스의 추가 확산을 막기 위해 내년 2월 설 연휴 동안 수천만 명의 이주 노동자들에게 집으로 돌아가지 말라고 권장함으로써 가족 모임을 위한 가장 중요한 시기를 가로막고 나섰다.

국가 보건 위원회의 조치는 직접적인 여행 금지는 아니지만, 2월의 전통 명절은 많은 근로자들이 그들의 가족을 보기 위해 집으로 여행할 수 있는 유일한 시간이자 여전히 특별하기 때문에 이번 조치가 주목을 끈다.
