Erdogan says Turkey's place is in Europe before EU summit

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that Turkey sees itself as a part of Europe, but he called on the European Union to “keep your promises” on issues such as the country’s membership bid and refugees.

He spoke before an EU summit due to be held next month. In recent weeks, EU members have raised the prospect of sanctions against Turkey over its gas exploration missions in the eastern Mediterranean.

“We always see ourselves as part of Europe,” Erdogan said in a virtual speech to ruling party members. “We chose to favor Europe as long as they don’t force us to look elsewhere.”

레제프 타이이프 에르도안 터키 대통령은 터키를 유럽의 일부로 보고 있으며 유럽연합(EU) 가입과 난민 문제 등에 대해 일요일 "약속을 지켜달라"고 촉구했다. 

에르도안은 다음 달에 열릴 예정인 EU 정상회의 전에 연설을 했다. 최근 몇 주 동안 EU 회원국들은 지중해 동부 가스 탐사 임무를 놓고 터키에 대한 제재 가능성을 제기했다.

에르도안 총리는 이날 여당 의원들을 대상으로 한 화상 연설에서 "우리 터키는 항상 스스로를 유럽의 일부로 본다"고 말했다. "EU가 우리에게 다른 곳을 보도록 강요하지 않는 한 유럽을 선호하기로 선택했다."고 말했다.
