Pompeo meets Orthodox spiritual leader in Istanbul

U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo met Tuesday with the Istanbul-based spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians during a short trip to Turkey that has raised the ire of Turkish officials and includes no meetings with any of them.

Pompeo, who is on a seven-country tour of Europe and the Middle East, tweeted pictures of him being greeted by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the leader of some 300 million Orthodox Christians, after being shown around the Patriarchate. He was also scheduled to meet with the apostolic nuncio to Turkey, Archbishop Paul Russell.

마이크 폼페이오 미국 국무장관은 터키 방문 중 이스탄불에 본부를 둔 동방 정교회의 정신적 지도자를 만나 터키 당국자들의 분노를 불러일으켰으며 이들 중 누구와도 면담하지 않았다.

유럽과 중동 7개국 순방에 나선 폼페이오 장관은 3억 명의 신도를 가진 동방정교회 지도자인 총대주교 바르톨로뮤 1세 옆에서 모습을 드러낸 뒤 환영받는 사진을 트위터에 올렸다. 그는 당시 터키의 교황 대사인 폴 러셀 대주교와도 만날 예정이었다.
