Turkish leaders condemn Charlie Hebdo cartoon of Erdogan

Turkish officials on Wednesday railed against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo over its cover-page cartoon mocking Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and accused it of sowing “the seeds of hatred and animosity.”

The cartoon could further heighten tensions between Turkey and France, which erupted over French President Emmanuel Macron’s firm stance against Islamism following the beheading of a teacher who showed his class caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad for a free speech class.

Leaders from around the Muslim world also added their voices to criticism of what they see as attacks on Islam in the West, while France vowed not to back away from its defense of the freedom of expression.

터키는 에르도안 터키 대통령을 조롱하는 만화를 실은 프랑스 풍자 잡지 Charlie Hebdo에 대해 "증오와 적대감의 씨앗"을 뿌렸다고 수요일 비난했다.

에마뉘엘 마크롱 프랑스 대통령이 무함마드 선지자를 풍자한 캐리커처를 수업에서 보여준 교사가 살해된 이후 이슬람주의에 대한 강경한 입장을 고수하면서 이 만화는 터키와 프랑스 간의 긴장을 더욱 고조시켰다.

이슬람권 지도자들도 서구의 이슬람에 대한 공격으로 보는 비판에 목소리를 더했고, 프랑스는 표현의 자유에서 물러서지 않겠다고 단언했다.
