UK, Canada impose sanctions on Belarus president, 7 others

Britain has imposed sanctions on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, his son and six other senior government officials following the disputed presidential election and a crackdown on protesters in Belarus.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Tuesday that the sanctions were introduced as part of a coordinated approach with Canada “in a bid to uphold democratic values and put pressure on those responsible for repression.”

The measures include a travel ban and asset freeze on eight individuals from the Belarusian government, including Lukashenko, son Victor Lukashenko and Igor Sergeenko, the head of the presidential administration. Similar sanctions were imposed by Canada.

영국은 벨라루스에서 논란이 되고 있는 대통령 선거와 시위대에 대한 탄압에 따라 알렉산더 루카셴코 벨라루스 대통령과 그의 아들 그리고 6명의 고위 정부 관리들에게 제재를 가했다.

도미니크 라브 영국 외무장관에 따르면 이번 제재는 캐나다와의 협력을 통해 마련되었다고 화요일 밝혔다.

루카셴코와 그의 아들 빅토르 루카셴코, 이고르 세르게엔코 행정부 수반 등 벨라루스 정부 관리 8명에 대한 출국금지 및 자산동결 조치가 이번 제재에 포함됐다. 이와 비슷한 제재가 캐나다에서도 부과되었다.
