Tensions grow as Bosnian authorities crack down on migrants

Tensions are growing in the northwestern Bosnia after local authorities launched a widespread crackdown on thousands of migrants stranded in the area and set up police roadblocks to prevent more Europe-bound newcomers from arriving.

Authorities in Bosnia’s Krajina region, which borders European Union-member Croatia, had to dispatch special police forces Wednesday night to a U.N.-run migrant camp near the town of Bihac to calm a protest by 1,000 migrants who live there, sparked by the alleged police beating of an migrant.

The staff of the International Organization for Migration, which is running all seven migrant camps in Bosnia, withdrew from the tent camp of Lipa before special police arrived. Officers fired several warning shots into the air to quell unrest by groups of stone-throwing migrants.

보스니아 북서부에서는 유럽에 발이 묶인 수천 명의 난민들에 대해 현지 당국이 대대적인 단속에 나선 가운데 더 많은 유럽행 신규 난민들이 도착하는 것을 막기 위해 경찰 차벽을 설치하면서 긴장이 고조되고 있다.

유럽연합(EU) 회원국인 크로아티아와 국경을 접하고 있는 보스니아 크라지나 지역의 당국은 경찰이 난민을 구타했다는 의혹으로 촉발된 난민들 1000명의 시위를 진정시키기 위해 수요일 밤 비하크 마을 근처의 유엔이 운영하는 난민 캠프에 특수 경찰을 파견했다.

보스니아에서 7개 난민캠프를 운영하고 있는 국제이주기구(IO) 직원들은 특수경찰이 도착하기 전에 리파 텐트캠프를 철수했다. 경찰관들은 돌을 던지는 난민들의 불안을 진정시키기 위해 공중으로 몇 발의 경고 사격을 가했다.
