Ceasefire in war-torn eastern Ukraine to begin at midnight

Ukrainian and rebel forces in war-torn eastern Ukraine have started preparing for a “full and comprehensive” ceasefire scheduled to begin at midnight on Monday.

Rebel officials said Sunday they have instructed their troops about the ceasefire and issued a decree banning weapon use. Ukraine’s military said their forces “have begun preparations” for the ceasefire.

If upheld, it would “pave the way for implementing other clauses” of the Minsk peace deal, the office of Ukraine’s president said earlier this week.

Brokered in 2015 by France and Germany, the Minsk agreements aimed to resolved the conflict between Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists that flared up in 2014 after Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The conflict has since killed more than 14,000.

전쟁으로 피폐해진 동부 우크라이나의 우크라이나와 반군 세력은 월요일 자정부터 시작될 "완전하고 포괄적인" 휴전을 준비하기 시작했다.

일요일 반군 관리들은 군에 휴전을 지시했으며 무기 사용을 금지하는 명령을 내렸다고 말했다. 우크라이나 군부도 자국군이 "정전을 위한 준비를 시작했다"고 밝혔다.

이번 주 초 우크라이나 대통령실은 휴전이 유지된다면 민스크 평화협정의 다른 조항들을 이행할 수 있는 길을 열어줄 것이라고 밝혔다.

2015년 프랑스와 독일의 중재를 통한 민스크 합의는 러시아의 크림반도 합병 이후 2014년 불거진 우크라이나와 러시아의 지원을 받는 분리주의자들의 갈등을 해결하기 위한 것이었다. 이 분쟁으로 인해 지금까지 1만 4천명 이상이 사망했다.
