Russia skeptical about nuclear pact extension prospects

Russia’s top diplomat said Friday he’s not very optimistic about prospects for an extension of the last remaining U.S.-Russia arms control agreement because of Washington’s focus on making China sign up to the pact.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that Russia only wants to keep the New START treaty as much as the U.S. does and will protect its security regardless of the pact’s fate.

“We only need the extension as much as the Americans do,” Lavrov said during a conference call with foreign policy experts. “If they categorically refuse, we will not try to persuade them.”

금요일 러시아의 고위 외교관에 따르면 미-러 군축협정의 연장 전망에 대해 미 당국이 중국이 이 협정에 서명하도록 하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있기 때문에 그다지 낙관적이지 않다고 말했다.

세르게이 라브로프 외무장관은 러시아는 미국만큼 뉴스타트(New START) 조약을 지키고 싶으며 조약의 운명과 상관없이 안보를 지킬 것이라고 경고했다.

라브로프 장관은 이날 외교정책 전문가들과의 전화회담에서 "미국이 하는 만큼만 연장하면 된다"면서 "만약 그들이 단호히 거절한다면, 우리는 설득하지 않을 것"이라고 말했다.
