EU says 'significant divergences' remain in Brexit talks

EU and U.K. negotiators have yet to find a way to overcome “significant divergences” in their attempt to seal a post-Brexit compromise, a spokesman for the European Union’s executive arm said on Thursday.

Following Britain’s departure from the EU’s political institutions on Jan. 31, the two sides are trying to secure a new trade deal before the end of the year, when Britain will effectively exit the EU’s tariff-free economic zone.

But negotiations have proved difficult. The parties appear far apart on a number of issues including regulations for businesses and the fishing industry, with the U.K. adamantly opposed to EU demands for long-term access to British waters.

유럽연합(EU) 집행부 대변인은 "EU와 영국 협상단이 브렉시트 이후의 타협안을 확정하려다 '중대한 의견차이'를 극복할 방법을 찾지 못했다"고 목요일 밝혔다.

지난 1월 31일 영국의 EU정치기관 이탈에 따라 양측은 영국이 사실상 EU의 무관세 경제권을 빠져나가는 연말을 앞두고 새로운 무역협정을 맺으려 하고 있다는 지적이다.

그러나 협상은 어려운 것으로 전망된다. 영국이 영국 해역에 대한 EU의 장기적 접근 요구에 완강히 반대하고 있는 가운데, 당사국들은 기업과 수산업에 대한 규제를 포함한 많은 문제들에 대해 의견차이가 큰 것으로 보인다.
